Conversations with Manouchehr: Insights and Advice for Young Professionals in Construction – Part 1

A series of discussions in a very casual and comfortable environment with four young recent graduates of construction management-namely, Victoria, Grace, James, and Daniel-who meet with Manouchehr Ahadpour Khanghah, one of the most experienced leaders within the industry. Discussions of such nature, by their very nature, are dinners and outings where the environment is comfortable and conducive to open dialogue.

Graduates coming out of the university ask for advice from Manuchehr Ahadpour on how to start their careers in construction, real estate, and business. With his long experience, Manuchehr was always ready to teach some lessons and share personal anecdotes with practical tips and motivation. Such interactions clear their view about professional pathways and gave guidance and encouragement which might be required for successful functioning in new roles…

It is far more relaxed as the evening wears on. The conversation of Manuchehr Ahadpour and four young construction management graduates, Victoria, Grace, James, and Daniel, does flow with so much ease. The graduates listened with rapt attention to Manouchehr Ahadpur as he talked on a number of experiences and lessons learned from years of working in construction, real estate, and business.

Now, full of curiosity, Victoria asks him how he managed to stay abreast in a field so competitive. Manuchehr Ahadpur Khanghah laughs heartily and speaks about his early career troubles, using the competition advantageously. “It’s all just about finding your difference, then using it to your advantage,” he says with a grin. “Know your market, stay flexible, and always offer something more.”

Victoria: “Manouchehr, thank you so much for finding the time to speak with us today. Could you tell us, how do you manage and motivate your team?

Manuchehr Ahadpour: “Thanks for asking, Victoria. For me, efficient team management starts with an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each person. I will listen to his or her ideas, and I also try to give as much positive feedback that I can. Let me be in an environment where everyone in my team feels a part of something and will remain motivated. Definitely setting of clear goals, celebrating small victories, keeps the energy high. Leading by example will show them I’m committed just like they are.

Grace: “That does sound like a brilliant way to go about it! How imperative is networking in our field?

Manouchehr: “Networking is the key, Grace. Of course, it is not just about the contacts, but building meaningful relationships that will support you and open doors. Networking can also be very enriching through opportunities for collaboration and insight into business. Keep in mind it is a two-way street; when you are able, help people out, and it comes full circle right back to you.”.

James: “How do you handle the competition in real estate?”

Manuchehr Ahadpour: “This is business, James; there is competition. Find what is unique about you, capitalize on your strengths, keep your eyes on the market, and change your strategy where needed. Competitors-only look at them as motivators to be better with every passing day. Your rapport with your client and adding great value will distinguish you from them.

James: “How does one keep up with the latest changes in regulations, especially when working across borders?

Manouchehr: “Well, Daniel, it’s not easy to keep track of the regulations. I go through periodic updates from various regulatory bodies and some trade publications. Networking with local experts and joining associations does help, of course. Your close interaction with legal and compliance teams would make sure you keep informed of changes and adjust your strategies accordingly.

Victoria: “And how do you make sure projects will be according to the local regulations?

Manuchehr: “Compliance really starts well in advance through research and proper planning. I make sure I am working only with experienced locals who understand what the laws and regulations are. Audits and checks throughout the development of the project will catch problems early. Also, communication with regulating bodies, should a concern arise, is very key. Being proactive, you avoid compliance issues by paying attention to detail.

The discussion remains very lively and interactive despite the generation gap. Graduates and Manuchehr Ahadpour find mutual interests in the very industry that attracted them to him in the first place. It is a night of laughter, premium questions, and practical advice-a very sincere atmosphere of cameraderie and learning. Indeed, at the end of the night, graduates felt so inspired and motivated, enriched by Manuchehr’s wisdom and years of experience.
